American Studies, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

Doctoral students entering with a Bachelor's degree must complete a minimum of 42 credits of coursework. Doctoral students entering with a Master's degree must complete a minimum of 30 credits of coursework.

Advance to Candidacy: In addition to the coursework requirements below, all doctoral students must pass two comprehensive exams, as well as submit a Dissertation Prospectus. The first Comprehensive exam is on History, Theory, and Methods. The second exam is an Interdisciplinary Synthesis Paper. 

Post-Candidacy: Complete at least 12 credits of AMST899 and write and defend an interdisciplinary dissertation that answers significant questions about American culture(s) and experiences, past or present.
