American Studies, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

Doctoral students entering with a Bachelor's degree must complete a minimum of 42 credits of coursework. Doctoral students entering with a Master's degree must complete a minimum of 30 credits of coursework. All doctoral students are required to complete 12 credits of dissertation research. Students must also pass two comprehensive examinations (one general, the other specialized) and, after submitting a detailed prospectus, write and defend an interdisciplinary dissertation that answers significant questions about American culture(s) and experiences, past or present.
