Applied Economics (on-campus) (ECAM)

Graduate Degree Program
College: Behavioral and Social Sciences

ABSTRACT

The on-campus version of the Master of Science in Applied Economics program (ECAM) is a professional master's degree program designed primarily to enhance the professional development of applied economists.  The program is not designed to prepare students for PhD programs in economics.  The program prepares students to work as analysts in government agencies, private firms, and non-governmental organizations.

The ECAM program is an evening program with face-to-face classes on campus in College Park.  The ECAM program operates on the standard semester-based academic calendar.  The standard time to completion for a full-time student is 4 semesters.

The ECAM program's curriculum is identical to that of the ECAO program, but the ECAO program is located off campus in Washington, DC and operates on a quarter-term academic calendar, rather than the traditional semester-based academic calendar.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

The economics department does not offer fellowships or graduate assistantships to any of the students in the ECAM program.  Domestic students in the program are eligible for the US Department of Education's Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loans and Federal Grad PLUS Loans.  Some of our students also have their tuition paid, at least in part, by an employer or other 3rd parties.  The University's Financial Services Center provides Third Party Billing when the third party requires a bill from the university.

After submitting their completed application, international applicants who require a student visa will be asked to complete a "Certificate of Finances" form.  The form is designed to verify that international applicants have the resources necessary to finance their pursuit of our degree if they are accepted and choose to enroll.

More information about financial aid is available from the University of Maryland's Office of Student Financial Aid.

Domestic applicants have the option to pursue our degree in College Park or in our Washington, DC location. Classes are offered in the evening in both locations and the curriculum is identical in both locations, however, the 2 locations operate on different academic calendars.

The DC version of our program (ECAO) runs on a quarter-based academic calendar and full-time students can complete the 10-course degree in 15 months. The College Park version of the program (ECAM) operates on a traditional semester-based academic calendar and full-time students complete the degree in 4 semesters.

Most domestic students find the DC program more conveniently located relative to their jobs and the quarter-based academic calendar more flexible to completing the degree quickly while also working during the day.

International applicants who need the University of Maryland to sponsor an F1 student visa must apply to the College Park version of our program (ECAM). We do not sponsor student visas in the DC program (ECAO).

International applicants who already reside in the U.S. on existing visas that permit study (G4 and H4 visas, for example) may apply to either version of the program, similar to domestic students.

Applicants who are unsure about their preference location should contact CPmasters-econ@umd.edu before submitting an application.
