Abstract

Founded in 1856, the University of Maryland is located on 1,250-acre suburban campus eight miles from Washington, D.C. and 35 miles from Baltimore. The primary mission of Smith PhD is to produce individuals who will contribute to the discovery and dissemination of scientific knowledge through continued careers in research, publishing, and teaching at high quality research-oriented universities and research-oriented non-academic institutions throughout the world. In carrying out this mission, it is recognized that we operate in a knowledge-based economy that is being transformed by information technology.

Financial Assistance

Financial support is available to doctoral students in the form of fellowships, graduate assistantships, and scholarships. 98% of our students receive funding from Smith PhD. Students not funded by the program are typically funded by government or military scholarships, which are guaranteed for five years. Applications are considered first for quality with the assumption that funding is required from Smith PhD. Only after rendering an admissions decision will funding be considered and evaluated. The Robert H. Smith School of Business offers a PhD Program Suite, where every student has access to office space and supplies. Students have access to software and research computing tools.
