Mechanical Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

In addition, students must pass a qualifying examination, propose and have approved a Ph.D. dissertation topic (within two semesters of passing the qualifying exam), and successfully produce and defend a Ph.D. dissertation on an original research topic. 

Students in the Ph.D. program must take a minimum of 36 credits of approved graduate coursework beyond the B.S. degree (a minimum of 12 credits of coursework at the University of Maryland) and 12 credits of dissertation research. Students currently holding an M.S. from an approved engineering, math, or science program may apply up to 24 credits from their previous degree towards their doctoral coursework requirement. In addition, students must pass a qualifying examination, propose and have approved a Ph.D. dissertation topic (within two semesters of passing the qualifying exam), and successfully produce and defend a Ph.D. dissertation on an original research topic.
