PreK-12 World Languages, Master of Education (certification, M.Ed.)

The PreK-12 World Language Master’s Certification Program (MCERT) is a one-year graduate-level teacher preparation program that leads to teacher certification and a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree. Students in this program experience personalized and supportive learning from high-caliber faculty as they explore in-depth opportunities to connect content and pedagogy through intensive mentored internships in local partner schools. The program requires candidates to successfully complete 36 hours of coursework (including teaching internship), relevant Praxis exams, a research project and paper focused on teaching and learning , a teaching portfolio (edTPA), and a technology portfolio (ISTE).

*Undergraduate students may apply to the Integrated Master’s Certification Program (IMCP) in order to earn their secondary World Language teacher certification and a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree during their fifth year. 

Non-thesis only: 36 credits required

In addition to the course requirements, students must complete the following non-course requirements:

  • Pass the Basic Skills Examination
  • Pass the Praxis II Examination
  • Students must pass the ACTFL Examination(s)

*Undergraduate students complete coursework during their baccalaureate which partially satisfies the Maryland State Department of Education's teacher certification requirements. The remaining 30 credits for state certification are completed once the student is admitted to the graduate school.
