Majors
- Biological Sciences (Cell Biology and Genetics-CEBG)
- Biological Sciences (General Biology-GENB) advising for last names N-Z
- Biological Sciences (Microbiology-MICB)
Advising is mandatory for certain students (freshmen, recent change in major or specialization, GPA of 2.5 or below). The department coordinates with the BSCI office to advise students in the following Biological Sciences specialization areas:
- Biological Sciences: Microbiology (MICB)
- Biological Sciences: Cell Biology and Genetics (CEBG)
- Biological Sciences: General Biology (GENB) Last names that begin with the letters N through Z
Course requirements in these specializations can be found in the Biological Sciences requirements page. All specializations have common introductory and supporting courses. See the different advanced courses for each specialization.
Your assigned departmental advisor can be found in TerpEngage in your Team tab. Advisors are typically assigned in early October and early March. Questions about your assigned advisor, method of arranging advising appointments, or questions before applying for the major can be addressed by contacting the Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics Undergraduate Program Office, 1109 Microbiology (301-405-2766). See CBMG department advising information at: http://cbmg.umd.edu/education/undergraduate/advising/.
For advising in other Biological Sciences Specialization areas, see the Biological Sciences Major listing in this catalog.
Undergraduate Research Experiences
Students may participate in department hosted research experiences in faculty laboratories or laboratories at off campus locations. Please contact the Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics Undergraduate Office (301-405-2766) for more information or see the site: http://cbmg.umd.edu/education/undergraduate/ under "Research and Internships."
Specific courses in the department that offer credit for the research are described at: http://cbmg.umd.edu/education/undergraduate/research/. Areas of research in the CBMG department are described at: http://cbmg.umd.edu/research-1/research-areas/ with listing of faculty and their research.
Honors Program
The Departmental Honors Program involves a long term (three semester) independent research project undertaken with a faculty advisor. Students register for BSCI378H (research) and BSCI379H (seminar) each semester. Admission is based upon GPA. Students must arrange the research opportunity prior to application. Please contact the Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics Undergraduate Office for more information or see the site: http://cbmg.umd.edu/education/undergraduate/undergrad-honors/.
Student Societies and Professional Organizations
All students interested in microbiology are encouraged to join the University of Maryland Student Chapter of the American Society for Microbiology. Sigma Alpha Omicron is the honors chapter of this group. The groups meet regularly on campus. Information is available through the Undergraduate Program Office.
Scholarships and Financial Assistance
The Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) administers all types of federal, state and institutional financial assistance programs and, in cooperation with other university offices, participates in the awarding of scholarships to deserving students. For information, visit: http://financialaid.umd.edu.
Awards and Recognition
The department recognizes graduating seniors with awards funded by generous donors. These are listed at http://cbmg.umd.edu/about-1/scholarships-awards/.
